If you have a wait for the train I wholeheartedly recommend crossing the railway line and a stop atthe YHA- they serve lovely cakes, have clean toilets and you can sit outside in their pretty garden with nice views on a sunny day. The train recommended train is the one closest to 9.45am, but if doing the clockwise walk and aiming to lunch at Glynde the first train after 10am is fine, and if aiming to lunch in Rodmell in this direction the 9.15am might be a good idea. Passing over Seaford Head you get fantastic views of the path over the Seven Sisters ahead then head inland to follow the banks of the river Cuckmere through Westdean, Litlington and Alfriston. You'll be so preoccupied with feasting your eyes on the all the beauty available on this walk with the landscapes, the flora and fauna and the flowing river that eventually you'll look back and be surprised at how far back Lewes is. But something was different about this one. Wonderful open Downs. The South Downs The footpath hugs the river, comfortably elevated from the waters surging width. It has the advantage that you get the long Lewes to Southease section out of the way first, and this provides a decent length section before you get to lunch at the Abergavenny Arms in Rodmell. The Southease Swing Bridge is one view you will encounter. Those ads you do see are predominantly from local businesses promoting local services. In both directions the Landsdown Arms is a characterful pub near the station, and The Runaway, the buffet on platform 2 of Lewes station, is recommended for its excellent range of cakes: it is open until 6.50pm Monday to Friday, 5.50pm Saturday and 5.20pm Sunday. If you feel too tired to tackle this, you have to finish the walk at Southease, after just 12.5km (7.7 miles).
