I can see why this tobacco is the one that started the whole "Balkan" designation. Give it some time to age, and it's easily one of the best Balkans on the market. Trough the bowl the mixture burned well, did not have to relight my pipe at all except after some tamping which was necessary after some half bowl was gone to ashes. The smoky, woody, earthy, musty sweet Cyprian Latakia is the lead component. Good smoke! Whatever or however the process, this is the Holy Grail of pipe tobacco. Whatever Balkan Sobranie used to be (as I said, it's built on a famous name), there are numerous better, and more available, blends out there. The last time I smoked the real Balkan Sobranie Original mixture was in Italy 2004 (still produced but not much distributed then). At least I find it impossible now to say from the room note alone what Balkan has been smoked, but with Balkan Sobranie there never was any ambiguity. As another old codger, I am grateful for Leiconnsel's review below on this truly classic tobacco. Despite that I was allowed to finish the bowl, the darling :) So here also: points for authenticity! Oriental tobacco was standardized and sold uniformly, no more to be readily had as the local varietals with exotic names. I had no experience with the blend previously but, had tried the others years ago. Included were 6 tins of the old 759 and 3 tins of the #10. It is a brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured. Government (in the UK) considered it to be a pure tobacco for generations. Moreover, I find the Yenidje and other Orientals to be more pronounced and complex than in Peases Caravan. It's got a nice beat, and I can dance to it - even if it's a slow dance over in a dark corner. Although, you may want to let the tobacco dry a bit before smoking.
