All I have to say is DANCIN IN THE STREETS!!! WARNING- there is a mood-altering break between St. Stephen and Morning DEW. This recording is almost as amazing, it brings it all back in spades. You have to get the 3 matrix version though, not this one. Wonderful show. The night before is also very good, but this one trumps it for me. I used to have the tape of the second set with the Hunter S Thompson spoof at the end. I can understand why it didnt get to much play after the late 70's. I dont think I can adequately describe how beautiful this version of Row Jimmy is. Perhaps the most overrated show of all time. It's not perfect, as Fire demonstrates. Definitely NOT overrated. I knew my words (see below) would upset people and make them get defensive (see also my review of 12/31/77), but maybe I am trying to open minds myself. I actually would like to hear longer solos by JG but ya know, I'm greedy. Question: the first two copies i heard of this contained a smokin Samson and Delilah in the middle, i think between Estimated and Stephen- it was marked by a drum eff-up at the end, an extra 4 tom hits (guess Billy wanted more) any ideas where this is from? Well, take your studion version of terrapin Station and destroy it. All I have to say is Jack Straw! If you can get Keith drool out of your ears then this is a remarkable show. The sound quality is perfect. Jerry's epic-length solo over a single chord on "Dancin'" is worth the trip. Or Scarlet, Phil is ~ridiculous~ on the intro. Thank you Betty Cantor! Row Jimmy has this effect as well. 5/8/77 is a great show. Fix it and give it another go. Its a good show, its very good, but its not my fav. The dancin' is the hottest I have ever heard. It flows so well; the band is in such a great comfort zone, producing beautiful music. BLAH BLAH BLAH just everybody admit it the boys were playing as one, Phil is just sick on base Gotta love the boys. The first set takes off but the 2nd set stays up there ("you just glide there in the pure air, doin' figure eights by the pearly gates" - oh that's another song) and just never comes down. What got me to do this was listening to Loser at the Springfield show of the same year. It was a product of the time, the vibe, the work of supremely gifted artists, synchronicityand what did we pay for tickets to this-easily one of the finest of 2500+ performances-wasn't it something like five bucks a ticket, or were we paying seven by '77? That said, i see that each one of these shows (Boston, Buffalo, Alabama, Atlanta, Baltimore, NYC, Hollywood Florida, Winterland all have their strengths) The thing that separates Barton Hall is the exceptional Morning Dew. Also sad that Keith was near the end of his career and his life. Just beautiful, everyone is crisp and on point and most amazing of all is the vocals, I think they were at their vocal peak(as far as live goes) on the spring '77 tour. Just because others think that its just obviously the best dead show ever doesnt mean it has to be your fav either. I agree with skr213 - Keith's playing never did it for me, either. Anyone else find it creepy that oh_uh_um_ah and Back_From_The_Dead are the same person? This is cool to me considering Keith wasn't really the strongest organ player but could still lay down some different colors from time to time for Jerry to solo over and accentuate the band. It is amazing, but the first is wicked. Enjoy the scarlet>fire many many times. This is a must have show. It's all happenin'! and how can anyone deny the glory of the morning dew? Jerry's singing on Morning Dew will make you cry and go hide in a corner. To me it doesn't quite have the passion some other shows have. Tags. I'll admit, I wasn't a big fan of their late 70's studio work in my early unexpirenced days as a Dead Head, but after hearing Dancin' I sought out all their live material from '77. Definitely one of the great shows, but why are there so many out there that think this one performance is so good they feel compelled to actually dub a best dead show ever? I just wanted to write that I believe this show contains the best They Love Each Other that I have ever heard. But I love listening to it now or even a week afterwards as it was a 'radio' show.
